A worn path

I quite enjoyed reading A Worn Path, and found it to be an intriguing story. One thing that immediately stood out to me while I was reading this story was the authors power of description. The two whole paragraphs dedicated to Phoenix Jones's appearance and demeanor were really thoroughly written, and told a story in and of itself of what the author notices, and deems important about this woman. It told a lot about the character in a very compact, easy to read way that really pulled me in as a reader very effectively. The description of the walk she was taking was also very well written, and showed a beautiful walk through a cold forest in such an enthralling way. Her interactions with animals along her journey also provided character development, and painted a personality of a determined, yet snappy old woman who was determined to reach her destination…

The Cathedral

The Cathedral truly highlights the importance of the human soul that lies within human shells. The blind man within the piece sees the importance and beauty in life without the sense of sight within his reach. This aspect of the story truly the delivers the true meaning of the entire story. Our ability to see sometimes shields us from seeing the true beauty that lies within the human soul, and this message is delivered through the character of the blind man within the novel.

His ability to bring about humbleness within his thoughts and words is ironically established through his disability to see. The contrast between him and the man who can see truly shows how blind we can be as people despite our ability to see everything through our eye sight. Through not being able to see, shallow and base thoughts based on physical appearances and structures are disinteg…

I did not read this particular short story, but your analysis made me want to.

A Worn Path

Right off the bat i like the incredible vocabulary and the descriptive nature of the writing. Often times when reading a piece of writing I notice when the author doesn't go into detail about what they are talking about and I think that it can make the writing somewhat bland and uninteresting. With this piece of writing though, I really enjoyed being able to picture everything that was being described.

One thing I noticed while reading the post was the woman doesn't really speak in entirely complete sentences. Phoenix also says things that are almost incoherent. one example of that would be "'Sun so high!' she cried, leaning back and looking, while the thick tears went over her eyes. 'The time getting all gone here.'" On this topic, I am torn between two thoughts. My first reaction is that the woman is just very old and is quirky but the…

Thats an interesting thing to note about her not speaking in full sentences. it gave me the sense that she was tired of having to talk to these people, and was being short because she had a long journey.

Cathedral

I like to believe that I am very in touch with my emotions, so whenever I'm reading stories or other works, I sift through them in search for any kind of deeper meaning or symbolism of sorts. However, in this story, I couldn't find it. I did not fully understand what the author was trying to get across at the end and I thought it cut off at a bad point. The rest of the story was moving, but I wish the narrator's character change was a little more emphasized because the way the author wrote it didn't stand out to me. I understand there was a clear realization or epiphany for the narrator about the blind man but I didn't fully grasp it. I think the author was trying to explain that you don't need sight in order to enjoy life or be happy, which is very touching. Th…

The stream of conciseness within the piece helped me connect with the shallow nature of our thoughts when we can make judgements based on what we see and not from what's within.
