A worn path

I quite enjoyed reading A Worn Path, and found it to be an intriguing story. One thing that immediately stood out to me while I was reading this story was the authors power of description. The two whole paragraphs dedicated to Phoenix Jones's appearance and demeanor were really thoroughly written, and told a story in and of itself of what the author notices, and deems important about this woman. It told a lot about the character in a very compact, easy to read way that really pulled me in as a reader very effectively. The description of the walk she was taking was also very well written, and showed a beautiful walk through a cold forest in such an enthralling way. Her interactions with animals along her journey also provided character development, and painted a personality of a determined, yet snappy old woman who was determined to reach her destination, despite her age and the distance. She talked to the animals as equal to people, and it gives a hint as to what she must be like on a typical day, and how she interacts with others. I liked in particular the way she criticized the buzzard, and how she quickly dealt with the dog, while she was busy meditating. The turn into race relations with the hunter was surprising to me, and his casual racism was haunting and sad. After I finished the story, I felt sorry for the determined old lady, because of what she has to endure to take care of her grandson. Her pride and volition were inspiring, and made this a truly charming story to read, despite the difficult subject matter.
