The Cathedral
The Cathedral truly highlights the importance of the human soul that lies within human shells. The blind man within the piece sees the importance and beauty in life without the sense of sight within his reach. This aspect of the story truly the delivers the true meaning of the entire story. Our ability to see sometimes shields us from seeing the true beauty that lies within the human soul, and this message is delivered through the character of the blind man within the novel.
His ability to bring about humbleness within his thoughts and words is ironically established through his disability to see. The contrast between him and the man who can see truly shows how blind we can be as people despite our ability to see everything through our eye sight. Through not being able to see, shallow and base thoughts based on physical appearances and structures are disintegrated and all that’s left to be analyzed is the true identity and meaning within things.
I found this concept extremely interesting because I find that often times I am like the man that can see. I make my judgements based on appearances and deprive myself of the opportunity to look deeper and find the real meaning being people and things. I believe that all people have the habit of making judgements purely based on first appearances, and for this reason, I found that we all have something to learn from the blind man in this story. There is always much more than first meets the eye.
I did not read this particular short story, but your analysis made me want to.
