A Worn Path

I chose to read this short story because the title seemed interesting. In this, an old lady travels through the woods which tests how much her body can handle at her age. It is very descriptive and makes it very easy for the reader to visualize what is happening and how everything looks. Welty writes, "She was very old and small and she walked slowly in the dark pine shadows" which shows the readers just how old she is and that she is not able to walk very well. It is also stated that she has to walk with a cane. She made this trip through the woods multiple times and has learned to walk it with just her feet and not use her eyesight. The story was confusing at points because it became difficult to distinguish between what was real and not. Her mind tricks her multiple times in the woods into thinking there is someone else there. At the end of the story, she finally arrives in town in order to get medicine for her sick grandson. I had to reread this scene a couple of times to try and figure out what was happening because I was confused whether or not he was dead. The genre of this piece is fiction and it is set on the Natchez Trace. This short story was extremely descriptive and this made it much more interesting because I was able to envision myself walking with her through the treacherous woods. She appears to be holding onto the hope that her grandson will get better with the medicine even though the rude doctor makes it apparent that it will not help. Old Phoenix earns 10 cents on her walk there in order to buy him a present for Christmas and this gives the story a sort of happy ending.
